Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood

Those who know me will note that I'm a sucker for Cowboy stories (in aprticular the Outlaw kind). The trailer for Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood looks cool. I would've appreciated a little more gameplay as this looks like a cutscene.

Truth be told, I dont remember the first Call of Juarez game being critically received all that well. All I really want is a spritual succesor to the awesome GUN game which I enjoyed so darn much.

I have a couple of concerns regarding these statues, both of which have to do with Minnie. First of all she looks like a gypsy-slut. Second, if she's Leia and Donald is Han does that mean that gypsy-slut Minnie is two-timing Mickey Skywalker? Perhaps I shouldn't read too much in to it.

Check out this other Leia interpretation.

Google Jones and the Fate of Atlantis!!

Familiar with Google Earth? How about their new underwater search tool? Someone in the UK claims to have found the fabled city of Atlantis! From the NY Times article:
British aeronautical engineer Bernie Bamford sighted a mysterious grid of undersea lines while browsing through Google Earth’s new underwater search tool. The strange pattern was spotted off the western coast of Africa, apparently near one of the possible sites of the legendary island.

Google has since put out a response to the "discovery" claiming that it's the result of sonar-equipped boats that are used to collect data from the ocean floor. Judge for yourself!

Critical Mass Officer Fired

Justice has been served. You guys may have heard of the bicyclist that was knocked down by a police officer in NYC during a Critical Mass ride. Critical Mass is a massive group ride, sometimes monthly, without a defined purpose. Some take it as a chance to make motorists aware of cyclists as traffic. Others lie on the ground to symbolize cyclist deaths caused by motorists. Still others use it as a means to educate the public on environmentally friendly travel.

Well, during a CM ride, a cyclist was tackled by a police officer for no apparent reason. It received lots of media attention because it was all captured on video tape. The vid, after the jump, clearly shows the officer acting without being incited. So the jerk got fired.

As reported by he NY Times:

"Mr. Browne [chief spokesman for the New York Police Department] said on Thursday that the firing stemmed directly from the events involving Mr. Long, which took place on July 25 during a monthly event known as Critical Mass, in which hundreds of cyclists ride through the city to advocate nonpolluting forms of transportation."

Serves him right.

Tour of California

Have you guys been watching the Tour of California? Well it has been plagued by rain since the onset. Although there has been some impressive feats of athleticism, like Mancebo riding alone for 100 miles and winning the 1st stage after breaking away 8 miles into the stage. Ballsy.

Fortunately today's stage was a lot more exciting with a flat sprint finish. Click the jump for more info.

Sprints, IMO, are the most exciting part of any professional tour. Yes, it is impressive to watch strength on climbs or break away after break away that get swallowed whole by the peloton. Sprints are just badass. Stage 3 of the Amgen Tour of California did not disappoint. Thor "God of Thunder" Hushovd on Cervelo Test Team beat out self-proclaimed fastest man on a bike Mark Cavendish from Team Columbia-Highroad.

Check out the look of desperation on Cav's and the team Rabobank rider's face finishing behind Hushovd. Sweet. Hushovd has always been a favorite of mine. Now on Cervelo Test Team along with last years TDF winner Carlos Sastre, they have good chances of punishing some people this coming year. Go to this website and look for the Stage 3 tab and scroll down for the stage win within the video box.

Of course there is also the return of Lance to Team Astana. He has told the press that he will be a Super Domestique Extraordinaire to teammate Levi Leihpheimer. Levi has won the ToC for the past two years now. Lance has so far done his job helping Levi as he still holds the yellow jersey. According to Lance, his role for the long run is still up in the air. Exciting to see what will happen. As a side note, Lance is riding for free. Thats right, a volunteer rider. He just wants to bring awareness to the Livestrong Foundation and the fight against cancer.

Levi being interviewed by some chubby guy.

Hopefully the rest of the ToC will be exciting. Sorry to cut the post short. I was going to post about Team Garmin/Slipstream but Lost is on.

Third Bike?

So... I couldn't help myself. Just got a sweet deal on a Yamaguchi Track Frameset with a Dura Ace headset. Tommy at West Village Bicycles threw in a custom Yamaguchi stem, and Nitto track handlebars wrapped with Brooks leather tape. Unfortunately he also had full Dura Ace componentry on it, not to mention an expensive wheel set. So I essentially got about 800 bones off a sweet ride, but I have no wheels, bottom bracket, or chain ring. Why was it so cheap? It's used. Though, other than some scratches in the paint on the top tube it is essentially mint. I can't wait to pick it up. It also ended up costing me the rest of my summer money. Oh well, it is totally worth it. If I end up not being able to afford it I could always sell it on eBay for a profit. I have a feeling it would sell very well judging on the selling prices of framesets nowhere near as nice as this one. Such a pretty bike. I'll take pictures of it when I get it. Here are some pics from Yamaguchi's website.

Yamaguchi has a cool history. He was a famed frame builder working for 3Rensho in Japan. He then came to the states and started his own company. He made custom frames for the US National Track team in his heyday. Here is a cheesy looking US version.

Update: This bike on West Village Bike's website, this very one, is mine. All MINE, bwahahahahaa.

Bow down before me in ENVY!!!

Well, well, well... All the talk of Nazi zombies 'round this joint have brought this Mexican zombie out of hiding. Roy trapped me in our tool shed out back with my PS2 and a copy of TimeSplitters again, and since I'm a stupid zombie now (Thanks again, Adry!), I couldn't figure out the damned door knob. Took me a month to figure it out, but gosh darnit, here I am, free to feed on braaaaaiiiiiinsssss... Ahem. And play STREET FIGHTER IV BEFORE ALL YOU SUCKAS!

I'm gonna be a jerk about this and write a review Ă  la Harry Knowles, tell you all about my day, what I was wearing, what I had for lunch (brains, duh), and what my Zombie poop smelled like that day (for you, Effie)... all before I even get to talkin' 'bout SFIV.

As you guys might already know, arcade cabinets for Street Fighter IV will not be released outside of Japan, at least for the time being. Any cabinets found elsewhere are illegal, and arcades found out are subject to huge fines, believe it or not... There may be a few cabinets legally distributed to Korea and Australia in a month or two (I think), but that's besides the point. Now, only a handful of cabinets made it to the states (again, illegally). And holy hot damn, if there ain't three in Austin! Arcade UFO is now one of my favorite places to hang out. Click on the hyperlink for directions and more...

I shouldn't be at all surprised that more than a few of my colleagues in the grad film program here at UT Austin are huge Fighter fans... beginning with my roommate Roy. We've spent countless hours beating up on each other, and it's always great to release some stress. Moreover, I've improved drastically since playing with Roy on a regular basis. Just as stone sharpens stone, Roy has... sharpened... err. Nevermind.

So I've been buggin' Roy to go with me to Arcade UFO since I found out they had a copy of SFIV and he finally conceded. I started off the evening at the Hole in the Wall. Tossed back a pitcher or two of Fireman's #4 and tried to convince a few friends I ran into at the bar to join us for Fighter. No takers. But that was fine. I was too jazzed to care.

Now, the arcade... this place is a converted laundromat. It's dinky, it's cramped, but holy crap, I've never seen nicer arcade cabinets. Most, if not all, of the monitors are now HD, there are imported Japanese games that I never would have seen otherwise, and the dudes that hang out there mean business. Arcade sharks. The kind of sharks that hover over your shoulder, watch you play for 5 - 10 min, plunk in their quarters, and then proceed to hand you your butt (presumably because they know your style from watching). Awesome stuff. But, finally, on to the game.

Surprisingly enough, there wasn't too long a wait for SFIV. They have a neat setup that let's 3 people play at a time. Gone are the days of rubbing shoulders up against your opponent. This setup has three different cabinets, one per player, that are networked to cycle through. Machine A fights against machine B while machine C plays the computer. If Machine A wins, then it matches up against machine C while machine B plays the computer, and so on. Very cool system (You get your own HD screen and plenty of room to play). Even cooler still, the machines are back to back, so you don't get to see your opponent. All very mysterious.

I haven't had that much video-game-induced adrenaline pumping through me in years... Of course, I'm sure the beer didn't hurt, either. And I didn't do too bad for myself. Out of 30 matches, I probably won about 10. Not bad for a SFIV virgin.

The Graphics: Just like the rest of you guys, I've spent the last couple of months looking at screen grabs and videos from the game. I did NOT like what I was seeing. SFIII: Third Strike had some beautiful 2D sprite animation. Aesthetically, the game was moving towards a more naturalistic representation of the characters, and now SFIV was gonna cartoon-y it all up. Well, I've been converted. Despite ridiculously goofy images like this one...

The graphics just fit. Especially with the new animation style. It's hyper-kinetic and very much "anime." I got chills watching Zangief lumber "big-boy" style towards me the few times I played against the computer... just his "walking forward" animation alone! And Blanka looks even more savage as his green, rippled stomach quickly pumps in and out with every breath, like the wild animal he is. Good stuff. Special moves are appropriately flashy and the inkblot theme works beautifully, too.

The Gameplay: Oh boy... where to begin. The timing is different. It's definitely going to take a while for fans of the series to nail the timing on this new iteration. Things are... curt. Staccato. Jumps, in particular, seem really sharp. Quick up, and much quicker down without really spanning too long a distance. Does that make any sense? Took me about 3-5 matches to really get into the swing of it. But once I did, it was pure Fighter fun.

There are only a few more things I'll mention here. New gameplay mechanics do indeed enhance the tried-and-true Street Fighter formula, most notably the "focus attack." Pressing both middle punch and middle kick, makes your fighter of choice turn all inkblotty. He/she changes their stance, going into a slow "I'm about to beat your ass" animation. Reminded me very much of Yoshimitsu's critical stab attack from Tekken. Okay, so... great. But here's the cool part. The longer you hold down the two "middle" buttons, the stronger your attack will be. Of course it takes excellent timing, but if you execute the move to it's fullest potential, it's entirely unblockable! Even cooler still, and this might be a bit tricky to explain... if you start the focus attack, you can cancel out of it by dashing forward or back. But, inevitably you're going to take a hit while you charge up the focus attack. You're essentially a sitting duck if you commit to the move. So, here's the neat part. If you take a hit, you will lose life, but on your life bar, the lost life doesn't disappear, but rather grays out. If you don't pull off the focus attack, or you let your opponent hit you again, then that grayed-out life is lost. If the focus attack is successful, it regenerates! Very, very satisfying to pull this one off...

Other than that, there are the standard Super Combos (ex, double hadouken and a punch), an Ultra Combo, which I haven't quite figured out yet, and when you do a regular special move but use two attack buttons (ex, hadouken with both jab and middle punch), it makes you flash yellow as it's executed, but, again, I have no idea what this does and I'm too lazy to research online...

The Sound: Eh... it was too loud in the arcade to really make anything out. Pretty sure the jams are solid, though.

So, all in all, an awesome experience. Game ships for the home consoles on Feb. 17th. Start stretchin' out those thumbs now, kiddos...

More Zombies!!

Im thrilled to report that there will be more Zombies coming to Call of Duty: World at War in the near future. No news on if they will be of the Nazi ilk... personally I'm an equal opportunity zombie "dispatcher" so whatever they wanna throw at me I'll take it.

I've been playing a lot of Call of Duty online recently and I have a few impressions:
First, I had no idea how addictive online FPS frag-fests could be.
Second, I love sending out dogs to take out my enemies.
Third, Whats the damn deal with these wimps on my "team" that dont ever go for the flag or capture zone in War mode. I actively try to flank the opposing team but with the ultimate goal of taking the zone. I hate seeing my own team camping out at the respawn zone of our enemy.
Take the fun out of it why dont'cha!

Resident EEEVIIIIIILLL (5)

I finally got a chance to play the demo for Resident Evil 5. It was not good. Sure the graphics are probably the best I've ever seen on my piano black box, but the controls were so clunky. I suppose Ive been conditioned (or at the very least spoiled) by the quick action of games like Uncharted and even CoD. I like to aim quick, shoot quick and get the hell out of there. This game does not give me that fun or exciting "feeling" that I get from these other games. Dont get me wrong, I fully understand that this game is meant to be played at a slower pace or at least thats what the older games in the franchise focused on. And another thing! I dont much like the game dynamic of always hurtin' (and huntin') for ammo. Perhaps I didnt invest enough time into getting the gist of it. Regardless... call me when a PS3 Silent Hill (that doesnt suck) coems out.

Come for the gambling...

...stay because flesh-eating Zombies devour you. Now that I mention it, do zombies poop? I mean if they eat and eat for eternity do they eventually defecate the deceased? Anyway, the real reason for this post is because a sequel to "Dead Rising" (which was originally exclusive to the Xbox 360) will be released on all platforms. Part one took place inside of a shopping mall and the sequel will take place in a super casino.
This makes me happy because I saw Adrian play this game a lot and I always wanted to give it a go. Ill never forget when Adri took to about 50 zombies with the business end of an industrial strength lawnmower contraption out in the shopping mall courtyard... a lot of good zombies re-died that day.
